World Health Day - 7 April
Your eyes: A unique window to your overall health
At Barracloughs, we believe your eyes play a unique and vital role in revealing more than just how well you see. As we approach World Health Day on Tuesday, 7 April, we’re highlighting how our investment in pioneering technology allows us to detect life-threatening health conditions during our specialist eye examinations.
The theme for this year’s World Health Day is "Together for health. Stand with science," kicking off a year-long campaign that celebrates the power of scientific collaboration in protecting our wellbeing.
For our team here at Barracloughs, recent scientific and technological leaps mean that eye exams are now more important than ever. They aren’t just about checking your prescription; they are a frontline tool for identifying wider health issues like diabetes, heart disease, stroke and even certain cancers.

Seeing beneath the surface with OCT
As an independent practice, we are proud to provide advanced eye health screening using state-of-the-art Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). This technology allows us to look at your eyes in extraordinary detail.
Unlike a standard eye test, the OCT provides a 3D scan of what’s happening beneath the surface of your retina. This helps us spot the earliest signs of conditions such as:
- Glaucoma
- Macular degeneration
- Diabetic retinopathy
Often, we can see these issues developing long before you notice any symptoms yourself. The scan is quick, completely non-invasive, and can be added to your routine eye exam, giving you total peace of mind that your health is being monitored with the best tools available.
A wider perspective with Optomap
We also utilise Optomap (at our Bexhill practice only), a revolutionary scanning laser system. This allows us to capture an ultra-wide, detailed image of your eye - including the extreme peripheral areas of the retina that are usually very difficult to see.
By getting this "big picture" view of your eye’s internal structures, we can ensure early detection of serious retinal issues like tears, breaks, or detachments, as well as systemic signs of diabetes.

A message from Kate Motylinski, Bexhill Practice Manager:
"World Health Day is a timely reminder of why being proactive about your vision is so important. Early detection is absolutely crucial in preventing avoidable sight loss, so we urge everyone to attend regular examinations to catch any issues as early as possible.
What is perhaps less well known is the role these exams play in flagging up serious systemic health concerns, particularly when a patient feels perfectly fine. The benefit is twofold."

This year’s World Health Day marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organisation in 1948. At Barracloughs, we are leaning into this year's focus on science-based guidance to help deliver a healthier future for all our patients.
