Eye Supplements - Why Use Them?

It's very important to remember that good nutrition will keep your eyes healthy and functioning at their best throughout your life. Lutein and zeaxanthin are two of the most important nutrients for your eyes because they may reduce your risk for macular degeneration and cataracts.

These nutrients are carotenoids which are yellow to red pigments found in vegetables and other plants. In plants, lutein and zeaxanthin absorb excess light energy to prevent damage from too much sunlight, especially high-energy light rays called blue light.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in a number of green, leafy plants and colourful fruits and vegetables. They are also present in high concentrations in the macula of the human eye - this gives the macula its yellowish color (the macula is also referred to as the "macula lutea". Macula is Latin, meaning "spot" and lutea means "yellow".

Recent research has discovered a third carotenoid in the macula. Called meso-zeaxanthin, this pigment is not actually found in food sources and appears to be created in the retina from ingested lutein. Certain supplements contain meso-zeaxanthin (see below). Lutein and zeaxanthin have important antioxidant functions in the body. Along with other natural antioxidants, including vitamin C, beta carotene and vitamin E, these important pigments guard the body from damaging effects of free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can destroy cells and play a role in many diseases. In addition to important eye and vision benefits, lutein may help protect against atherosclerosis (buildup of fatty deposits in arteries), the disease that leads to most heart attacks.

Eye Benefits of Lutein and Zeaxanthin

It is believed that lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin in the macula block blue light from reaching the underlying structures in the retina, thereby reducing the risk of light-induced oxidative damage that could lead to macular degeneration. Supplements to boost those nutrients

We highly recommend the use of Macushield which is a great source of antioxidants (such as lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin) which neutralise those harmful free radicals. Smoking, pollution, fried foods and most importantly, blue light are all dangers against which these antioxidants will work against. Blue light is present in sunlight, car headlights and the screens of devices such as TV's, smartphones and tablets, amongst other sources. The antioxidants mentioned above will absorb this harmful blue light. We now offer Rodenstock Protect Balance 2 lenses which reduce the amount of blue light entering the eye, protecting your inner eye and leaving your eyes feeling fresh even at the end of the day.

We can supply Macushield at all stores in 90-day packs.
